Turn your dreams into profit

It’s all well and good to spot a market trend, get on board early and ride that wave to riches. But, as our brand scientist Louise Kelly explains, finding your own inner passion is often the key to competitive advantage in business.

I was feeling really confident when I started my company Hearts and Minds. I planned to ride the wave of customer relationship management… all the way to the bank. But things didn’t go according to plan and there was a time of struggle in the early days.
Finally, I reached one of those defining moments that every entrepreneur goes through at some point: I had to ask myself, “Do I go forward, or do I quit?”
Like all trend surfers, we were early to market. But I needed to know whether I should ride the wave out, or just to stop, cut my losses and exit quickly.
Night after night, I’d lie in bed with everything running through my head until one night, it all finally became clear. I had a strong message from my subconscious, “When you hear it coming and it’s not here yet, that’s because it really is big.”
I took that as a signal from the inside to keep plugging away at it and literally felt an energy pulling me towards my dreams!
As it happened, all the setbacks I had experienced previously became the lessons that shaped my business into what it is today. Those setbacks helped us crack the code of making money for our clients.

So what is that message from the inside and how do you tap into it? Peter Wallman, an Australian business speaker who travels the world lecturing on the subject, calls it “the wisdom of passion”. Peter has developed the science of dipping into people’s feelings and passions, and turning them into a competitive advantage for business.
It’s one thing to pick a trend, but quite another (and just as important) to use your passion to influence your business strategies and practical decisions.
Passion is the fire inside that energises you to win. It gives you authenticity and clarity, and when you’re entering the uncharted waters of a new business, that’s the compass by which you navigate!
Peter talks about taking passion out of the bedroom and into the boardroom, and not in a Cashmere Mafia kind of way.
When you use your passion, things come easily and more gracefully. Passion is the fuel for your motivation, it is the deep inner desire to reach out and take what you love.
Use your passion and dreams to help you decide whether you exit a trend or keep riding it. Think about what comes next: if you feel energised, keep going.
Write down your feelings, or ask people if they notice when you feel the most alive and energised. People who focus on what they love in business talk about feeling supercharged about their goals.

Professional passion map coaches have helped many small business owners achieve wild and bold goals in the space of 12 months. I’m talking goals such as income spikes of millions of dollars, or realising the dream of taking a business global. Passion maps can be used by individuals or teams and can even be used to improve your personal relationships.
So next time you’re lying awake in bed, thinking about your business and wondering, “Should I go on?” listen to your inner voice. What’s your passion? Take a chance and let it guide your business.
