Us Aussies are less bludge-y than we thought.

Us Aussies are less bludgey than we thought.

Good news, fellow Australians. We may hold the silver medal to America's gold in the fatty-boom-ba Olympics, but as for downloading non-work-related files and software on our work computers, Australians all let us rejoice.

In November 2007, Business Software Alliance (BSA) undertook an international survey to gauge what the workers of the world are doing on their bosses' time and networks. Only 22% of Australians "download non-work-related software on our office computer, compared with 55 per cent of Asian workers and 48 per cent globally."

An even more surprising finding is 16% of Aussies actually admitted (are they crazy??) to illegally downloading music and movies on their work computers. Our Asian counterparts, however, are even more willing to spill the beans, with 45% confessing they have been furiously pirating music and movies.

While some companies have barriers set up limiting sites their employees can visit, a large number don't. This leaves them open to prosecution for having illegal software and files on their network. Unfortunately for them, claiming ignorance is not a defense in the eyes of the law.

The Federal Government is pushing to alter the Telecommunications Act to include "counter-terrorism measures" that allow "companies providing services critical to the economy" to review emails their employees are sending and receiving.
This will also potentially reduce the number of Australian workers downloading files they shouldn't, knowing their bosses can legally sniff around their computer usage.
