It's a bit naive, thinking that swapping search engines you will no longer be affected with information gathering. How else are they going to make their money, they all do it, apple, ms, google. Google provide the tools so you can surf without being tagged. Here's a great example from "archive.org's wayback machine", nothing leaves the web. As for google, love the fact that u can make a living using there api's and hosting their adds.

I have removed Google as my search engine. I do not want them tracking my searches, analysing them, and then bombarding me with Ads they assume I should need! Also - I strongly object to the fact that Google now plans to keep records of everyone who uses their search engine, and never delete those records!
I'm probably pretty boring with the types of searches I make, - but that's not the point. I don 't want Google "analysing" me and "bombarding" me with Ads etc.
There is no "opt in" or "opt out" - Google has become "Big Brother!"

Thanks for contributing to the discussion, Really? You're right that Google+ followed Bing, though I should point out that the article doesn't say which came first. It appears the latter introduced social elements in late 2010 – changes that pre-date the launch of Google+ itself by over 6 months.

HEy, the 1990's called, they want their argument back.... I mean, an argument based on patch management for an article based on Search? Really? you looked closely, you would find that roles are well on their way to being reversed. It is google that now tracks all your activities, your search, your mail, your videos... and with no opt-out available.

Also, I am surprised at the incorrect facts that are displayed in this article. Bing had incorporated Facebook and Twitter results well before Google introduced Google+. It was Google's response to moves made by the Microsoft-Facebook partnership. If In fact, Googles integration with Google+ as well as the forced data-tracking without opt-out provision that is being met with increasing codemnation and suspicion.

Google is now the much "hated" advertising engine, not search engine, of the modern era, just like Microsoft was the much hated OS of the 90s and up to, say, around 2005.

Why? Well, Google was accurate but isnt anymore because they weight their algos according to who pays the most, first, then who says what about your site on Twitter and Facebook, second. So, asking a question of Google gets you an answer to a question that you never asked nor wanted.

I have tried - and everyone should for themselves - this with various sites, even those run by web site designers who know how to put together proper meta tags and words on their site, to hook into reciprocal linking without looking like link farming and so on but I picked sites that I know, not necessarily those known by everyone. In Yahoo and Bing, certain top of the ranks sites didnt even figure in the first 10 pages of Google results meaning that the person running that site who may wish to make income from it has little chance of a "click by" "web surfer" hitting their target. however, if that same site is willing to pay Google A$10,000 or more then they WILL, without fail, be top of the charts. The same site on Bing and Yahoo can be top of the search list on the same phrase search or even within the first or second pages.

The above is why I am informing all my I.T. clients to replace their default search provider with Bing or Yahoo (even though they are the same thing, they arent to a lot of people) and forget Google. Google, while being the monstrosity that Microsoft used to be, these days, is much like choosing your favourite OS. You want Windows because you have used it all your life and dont know anything about Macs so you shy away from Macs for that reason. The odd part is that it in search engines, it is the Mac equivalent (Bing, Yahoo) that you should be using, the Microsoft version. You ask a question you get an answer there, not an answer to something you never asked or wanted!

You forgot to mention that people prefer Google because over the years Microsoft has established itself as a self-centred bully bent on owning your computer activities. Their patching solution based management has resulted in layers of junk in applications that make it slow and heavy. There search tools have always frustrated users and that has made everyone lose confidence. Their non existent service response in this Web2.0 era is not in tune with the times. They will have to work very very hard to regain the trust of the public, when there is an alternative.
