The 2024 iPhone 16 line-up

Apple’s iPhone 16 is set to launch in 2024. The iPhone 16 Pro will be larger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which is expected to reach 6.3 inches. This will mark the first major size upgrade for several years. Size changes will only affect the iPhone 16 Pro models. The iPhone 16 models will remain the same size as iPhone 15 models. The iPhone 16 models are not going to get any bigger. However, there will be some design changes thanks to the addition of buttons. For the most part though, the iPhone 16 and Pro models will still look the same as the iPhone 15 or 15 Pro models.

Apple has designed new A-series processors for the iPhone 16 line, based on the latest N3E 3 nanometer node. There could be some performance and efficiency improvements, but details are still a mystery. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 could have different chips. The higher-end chip would be limited to the Pro model.

In 2024, the Action Button will be expanded to include all four iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 16 lineup also has a “Capture Button”, which is used to take photos and videos. The Capture Button works like the shutter on a digital camcorder, detecting different levels of pressure to focus and then capture an image.

Apple plans to introduce a vertical lens configuration for the iPhone 16 models. This is a change from the previous diagonal lens arrangement. This new orientation should allow standard iPhone 16 models capture Spatial Video to be used with the Vision Pro headset. Apple may also bring the Tetraprism optical zoom lens 5x to the iPhone 16 Pro. It is not expected to be exclusive to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Here’s a roundup of all the iPhone 16 rumors we have heard. Apple’s plans are mostly set, even though there are still several months before the launch.

iPhone 16 Design

Apple tried several different designs, but decided to go with a vertically aligned system and a pill-shaped bump. Apple’s new arrangement of lenses allows it to reduce the size of the camera bump. Previous iPhones used a square camera bump in order to accommodate diagonal lenses.

The bump is shaped like a pill and houses separate Wide-angle and Ultrawide lenses. The microphone will be placed next to the lenses while the camera will be on the outside of the bump.

Apple will replace the mute button on the iPhone’s left side with an Action button. The iPhone 16 models are expected to adopt the same button as the iPhone 15 Pro models. Volume buttons will be below the Action button.

On the right side, a new Capture Button will replace the previous mmWave Antenna on the iPhone in the U.S. The button is placed in an area that is easy to reach when the iPhone is in landscape orientation. Apple has plans to move the antenna for the mmWave to the left-bottom side of the iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 models have a similar design to the iPhone 15 models, with the exception of the vertical lens arrangement and Capture Button. There are no other notable changes in the body shape or size.

Colors

The rumours surrounding the iPhone 16’s colour options have been mixed. One rumour claimed seven different colours including blue, pink and yellow.

Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo believes that the iPhone 16 is only going to be available in white, black, green pink and blue.

iPhone 16 models will likely adopt the same colored back glass as the iPhone 15 models. The rear glass will have a frosted appearance that contrasts the frame color.

MagSafe

MagSafe alignment magnets on iPhone 16 models are likely to be thinner than previous versions. This will reduce the size of magnetic rings required for MagSafe compatible cases.

Dummy Models

Apple suppliers leak dimensions and specifications for the new iPhones to case makers prior to their launch. Case makers use the information to create dummy cases. Because there is a lot at stake in being first to release a case, these dummy versions are usually accurate representations of new iPhones.

Several iPhone 16 dummy model were leaked in April and give an accurate look of the differences we can expect with the iPhone 16 lineup. The Pro models are taller and wider. And the standard iPhone 16 models now have a vertically oriented camera cutout instead of a diagonally positioned one.

Apple has not made any changes to the design of the iPhone 16 Pro’s exterior camera. The three lenses are still housed in a square camera bump.

According to rumors, the left side of the dummy model shows the Action Button on all four models. The Capture Button is highlighted on the right side. It is flush against the device, unlike the volume and power button.

iPhone 16 Pro Size Changes

According to multiple sources , the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to feature larger displays. According to multiple sources, the iPhone 16 Pro’s display will be 6.27 inches (rounded up to 6.3 inches), and the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s display is expected to be 6.85 inches (rounded up to 6.9).

The iPhone body’s dimensions will increase due to the larger display. The iPhone 15 Pro will be larger and taller than both models. While the thickness will stay the same, weight will increase due to the increased size. The general shape and design of the phone will not change, but bezels are expected to be thinner.

Images comparing a dummy iPhone 15 Pro Max with an iPhone 16 Pro Max show how much larger it will be in comparison to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have the same dimensions as the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15.

Display Technology

microlens technology could be used in the iPhone 16 OLED panel to improve brightness as well as reduce power consumption. The MLA or micro-lens system uses a pattern of millions of lenses to reduce internal reflection. Reflected light can increase brightness without increasing energy consumption.

Thanks to new materials, the OLED screens that will be used in iPhone 16’s lineup will be more energy efficient.

Apple has implemented Border Reduction Structure technology (BRS) for certain iPhone 16 models. This is expected to lead to slimmer bezels. BRS allows a more compact layout of the circuitry beneath the display. This results in thinner bezels, without compromising display performance.

The change to slim down the bezels isn’t yet known if this will only be applied to the iPhone 16 Pro or will it be implemented across the entire line.

Face ID could have some minor changes in the iPhone 16 versions, but what those changes might be is unclear. A supplier of Apple in England lost out on a deal with Apple due to Apple’s plans to “overhaul Face ID” with the launch the iPhone 16.

Buttons

Apple will add two new buttons on the iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16: one to replace the Mute Switch, and another that is completely new.

Action Button

In 2024, it is expected that the Action Button will be expanded for the iPhone 16 standard models. The Action Button on the iPhone 16 line will be the same as the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button.

The Action button replaces the traditional Mute switch and can perform a variety of functions, including activating the Flashlight or Camera, launching Shortcuts, disabling Focus Mode, translating, turning Silent Mode on/off, etc.

Capture Button

The additional Capture Button This button is found on the same side as the iPhone’s Power button. It is located in the area that the 5G mmWave antenne occupies in the United States.

The mmWave button has been moved to the left of the device below the volume buttons. The information states that the button will not be capacitive but rather mechanical. It can respond when pressure or touch is applied. iPhone users can zoom in and out with a swipe left and right, focus by pressing lightly, and record with a firmer press.

Capture Button is available on iPhone 16 models. It can be used to take photos and videos.

A-Series chips

Apple may still differentiate the iPhone 16 from the iPhone 16 Pro, as code in iOS 18 confirms. Apple could use A18 chips that have fewer GPU cores for iPhone 16 models (either disabled or binned), while chips with better GPUs could be used on iPhone 16 Pro. These chips may even be referred to as A18 Pro and A18.

The A18 chip, which is planned for iPhone 16 Pro models , could have a Neural Engine upgrade with “significantly more” cores. This would allow for better AI/machine-learning performance. It’s also expected to feature a larger die size.

Thermal Improvements

The iPhone 16 models will include a thermal design to combat overheating. Apple is working on a graphene-based thermal system for iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 16 Pro may also feature a metal casing to improve heat dissipation.

Graphene is more thermally efficient than copper, which is used to make iPhone heat sinks.

RAM

Standard iPhone 16 models can be upgraded to 8GB RAM. This is an increase from the 6GB RAM in iPhone 15 models. All four iPhone 16 models would then have 8GB RAM.

5G Modem Chips

iPhone 16 Pro models may be equipped Qualcomm’s Snapdragon modem, which will allow for faster and more efficient connectivity. Qualcomm claims that the X75 modem offers better carrier aggregation and the combined sub-6Ghz/mmWave transceiver uses up to 20% less power and takes up 25% less circuit board area.

Apple can market iPhone 16 Pro models with “5G Advanced connectivity” because Qualcomm’s X75 supports “5G Advanced”, a standard that includes AI and machine-learning enhancements.

The iPhone 16 standard models will use the Qualcomm X70 processor, the same chip used in iPhone 15 models.

Apple is developing its own modem and antenna to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm. However, Apple’s modems are not expected to debut until 2024. Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo thinks that Apple-designed chips will be available in 2025.

WiFi 7

Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo believes that the iPhone 16 Pro models will adopt net-generation WiFi 7 technologies, which are expected to deliver speeds of at least 30 gigabits/second and up to 40Gb/second.

Wi-Fi 7 can also use 320MHz and support 4K quadrature-amplitude modulation technology (QAM), resulting in speeds up to 2.4x higher than Wi-Fi 6 when using the same number antennas. Wi-Fi 7, with its faster transfer speeds and lower latency will provide a more reliable connection.

The iPhone 16 standard models may get upgraded to Wi-Fi 6E which supports the 6GHz WiFi band. Wi-Fi 6E, as it stands now, is only available on the iPhone 15 Pro models.

USB-C Port

Apple is expected to use USB-C technology for its iPhone 15 and 16 models.

AI Capabilities

Apple’s iOS 18 is said to introduce new Siri functions, powered by large language model. Some of the most cutting-edge AI generative features may be restricted to iPhone 16 models.

Leaked details suggest that iOS 18 will include many new LLM features for all iPhones. However, on-device AI capabilities could be exclusive to the iPhone 16 and could include enhanced interactions between Siri, the Messages App, automatically generated Apple Music playlists and integration with productivity apps to assist AI-assisted creation of content.

Microphone improvements

The iPhone 16 models will feature a microphone upgrade that will enhance the AI Siri experience. Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo says that the microphone will be improved with better water resistance, and will also have a higher signal-to noise ratio. This will improve Siri’s experience.

iPhone 16 Camera Technology

iPhone 16 Pro models may include an upgraded Ultra Wide camera, with a 48-megapixel image sensor. This would improve images under low lighting conditions. It would probably function similarly to the 48-megapixel main camera that uses pixel binning in order to combine data from four pixels and create one “super pixel”. This improves image quality.

According to reports, the 48-megapixel wide angle sensor in the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to feature an hybrid lens consisting of two glass elements and eight plastic elements. It will also include improvements for the Telephoto/Ultra Wide and Telephoto sensors.

In 2024, both the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro could have 5x Telephoto lens instead of only the Pro Max.

Camera Layout

Standard iPhone 16 models will have a vertical camera layout similar to that of the iPhone 12. Apple used a diagonal camera layout on the iPhone 13 & iPhone 14. The swap will allow spatial video recording with the Ultrawide & Wide cameras.

A leaked image from an iPhone 16 camera case features the rumored horizontal camera layout. This seems to confirm that choice of design for the iPhone 16 16. Leaked iPhone case molds have the same vertical camera layout.

Super Periscope?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max may feature a super-telephoto periscope camera for a dramatic increase in optical zoom. This information is from a Weibo user who has previously provided accurate information, but has yet to be backed up by another reliable source.

Cameras with focal lengths over 300mm are usually referred to as “super” or “ultra”. If accurate, the current telephoto is equivalent to a lens of 77mm, which could mean a noticeable increase in zoom capability.

Battery

Rumors claim that the iPhone 16 Pro will be using stacked batteries. This technology can provide a higher capacity as well as a longer life span. Stacked batteries have been used in medical devices and electric vehicles for years, but they are a new technology that is emerging.

The battery stack could be paired with faster charging options such as 40W MagSafe and 20W wired charging.

The iPhone 16 battery will have an updated stainless-steel casing, which allows for a higher energy density. This could result in a density boost of up to 10%. This could result in a longer battery life. However, this feature is not likely to be available on all iPhone 16 models.

EU law mandates that smartphone manufacturers produce batteries that are easily replaceable by users using readily available tools. Apple must implement this support by 2025. Apple plans to use a battery replacement technique for at least one iPhone 16 version, which will encase the battery in metal instead of foil. The battery can be removed from the chassis with a low voltage of electricity. This will eliminate the need for glue and make repairs easier.

Rumors indicate that the battery life of most iPhone 16 models may be slightly increased.

No iPhone 16 Ultra

Apple may introduce an iPhone 16 “Ultra with the iPhone 16 that will be sold along with the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus and iPhone 16 Pro. This device would be the highest-end iPhone, with a larger display, additional camera improvements and possibly a portless design.

The early iOS 18 code does not show any signs of a 16 Ultra iPhone, despite rumors to the contrary. Apple is only working on four iPhones, two of which are standard iPhone 16 models. The other two are “Pro” iPhone 16 model.

Pricing

Apple’s standard iPhone 15 models had component prices that were 16 percent higher than the iPhone 14 models. Apple has absorbed increased production costs on the iPhone 15 line, but Apple might need to raise the price for the iPhone 16 launch to avoid affecting overall revenue.

iPhone 16 Release Date

In September 2024 the iPhone 16 models will be released, following on from the iPhone 15 models of 2023.

Future iPhone Features

In 2025, standard iPhones will be able to use ProMotion to add up to 120Hz refresh rate to their display. ProMotion is only available on the “Pro” iPhones until 2025.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is coming in 2025 , could have a 48-megapixel Telephoto Lens that’s optimized for the Vision Pro headset. Analyst Jeff Pu made the rumor, but did not give any details about how it would interact with Vision Pro. Pu believes that the iPhone 17 Pro may also include an Apple-designed WiFi 7 chip.

Updated information indicates that under-display face ID won’t be available until at least 2025 . The under display Face ID allows for more display space, as the Dynamic Island will not be needed. However, there will still a camera cutout.

The 2025 iPhone 17 will include a 24-megapixel front-facing sensor that will improve the image quality in low light.

Rumors claim that the iPhone 17 will have an anti-reflective screen that is scratch resistant compared to the Ceramic Shield. It’s said to be “super-hard” and can withstand more abuse.

Apple’s 2026 iPhone 18 will, according to reports, feature both Face ID technology and front-facing cameras under the display. This could allow for a design without any cutouts. This would be the first design with an all-display.

  1. iPhone 16 launch event was a bit of a disappointment since other than the new A18 6-core chipset + 48MP camera + wifi 7 and 4k @ 120fps recording (Samsung already had it on S24 Ultra) we did not get anything else… And the whole AI is not even live…And that camera button that is very uncomfortable for portrait shots. One major camera improvement – low light photo performance!

Unless you are upgrading from iPhone 11 or earlier models, it does not make sense to go for 16 pro models this time. Wait for another year.
